Outdoor Ed - 6th grade edition
We were out at the school prairie for 95 minutes today. We completed three tasks:
1. we distributed an Indiangrass mix into an area that had very little high-quality native grass,
2. for the first time, the six graders got to see what a bluebird house nest looks like and how we clean them out,
3. we gathered seed from big Bluestem to move to another section of the prairie, and to plant this spring.
It’s fun to see kids’ eyes light up as they experience the outdoors. They have learned about the, “The big three.” Ask them sometime how you can tell the difference between Big Bluestem, Little Bluestem, and Indiangrass. We are constantly discussing what it means to build a legacy prairie that they are a part of. We also talk about what a biological community looks like
